This week came the announcement that no basketball fan wants to hear: the NBA commissioner canceled the first two weeks of the 2011-2012 season after a failed attempt to come to an agreement between the players’ union and the team owners.
Even worse is the potential effect this could have on our own Orlando Magic. In addition to lost revenue in ticket sales, there is the potential that the league would cancel the 2012 All-Star game that is scheduled to be hosted next February in town and would showcase our city and its brand new Amway Center.
So with the lockout leaving the NBA season in limbo, it hardly seemed the opportune time for the Magic to announce on its website the official logo of NBA All-Star Weekend 2012… on the same day the commissioner’s axe fell.
Most communicators know that timing is everything. Too bad this writer’s thoughts–which would have been a nice tribute to past all-star logos– were posted on the day that many wondered whether there would even be an All-Star 2012.
